Technical Solutions Engineer
Altair is a leading provider of cellular IoT chipsets and solutions, enabling connected devices across industries such as automotive, industrial, healthcare, smart metering, asset tracking, and consumer electronics. Our technology powers reliable, low-power connectivity for millions of devices worldwide.
At Altair, the people are the heart of our company. We're a team of engineers, builders, and problem-solvers who take ownership from day one. You'll work closely with experienced teammates, contribute to real decisions, and see your impact from concept through delivery. We maintain a flat organization where ideas flow freely between engineers and leadership, and experienced team members actively mentor newer colleagues.
We are looking for a Technical Solutions Engineer to join our Technical Solutions team. You will be the technical bridge between our customers, our module partners and Altair R&D - helping customers design in our ALT1250, ALT1350 and next-generation chipsets and taking them from evaluation to mass production.
Location: USA, Remote (with periodic travel to customer sites)
Work authorization: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
What you will be doing
On a typical day
Responsibilities
- Act as the main technical point of contact for assigned customers and module partners, from first evaluation through design-in, certification and mass production.
- Support customers with hardware and software integration: reference designs, RF guidance, power optimization (PSM, eDRX), GNSS and Wi-Fi positioning, and host MCU integration.
- Debug field and lab issues end to end - analyze modem logs, AT command flows, protocol traces and RF measurements, reproduce problems, and drive them to resolution with R&D.
- Help customers bring up and port applications on the embedded MCU (C/C++, RTOS, drivers, FOTA, CoAP/MQTT/LwM2M stacks).
- Support carrier certification and interoperability activities (PTCRB, GCF, operator acceptance) together with partners and labs.
- Run technical presentations, workshops and demos for customers, and contribute to RFQs, feature comparisons and competitive analysis.
- Capture customer requirements and feature requests and translate them into clear inputs for Product and R&D.
- Write application notes, FAQs and internal knowledge-base content.
- Travel periodically to customer and partner sites (mainly within North America, with occasional travel outside North America).
Requirements
- B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or a related field.
- 3+ years in a technical customer-facing role (field application engineering, solutions engineering or technical account management), plus 5+ additional years in technical roles such as system engineering, embedded development or RF engineering.
- Solid understanding of 3GPP cellular standards across 4G and 5G (LTE, LTE-M/NB-IoT, 5G NR and RedCap).
- Working knowledge of IP networking and IoT protocols: TCP/IP, UDP, HTTP, CoAP, MQTT and LwM2M, plus cloud connectivity with AWS (e.g., AWS IoT Core).
- Practical RF knowledge: link budget, sensitivity and TRP/TIS concepts, and comfort working with spectrum analyzers and call boxes.
- Hands-on embedded programming in C/C++ on MCUs, including RTOS, peripherals (UART, SPI, I2C) and low-level debugging.
- Experience reading and analyzing modem logs, protocol traces and AT command sessions.
- Proven experience working directly with Tier 1 customers, with strong customer-facing communication skills - able to explain complex technical issues clearly to engineers and managers alike.
- Familiarity with AI tools for coding and debugging (e.g., AI coding assistants for writing code, analyzing logs and troubleshooting).
- Self-driven and organized, able to manage several customer projects in parallel while working remotely.
Nice to have
- Experience at a cellular IoT chipset or module company.
- Familiarity with FOTA and device management.
- Background in carrier certification (PTCRB, GCF, AT&T / Verizon / T-Mobile acceptance).
- Knowledge of GNSS, low-power design and battery-life optimization for trackers.
- Exposure to 5G RedCap / eRedCap, NTN or device security
